Description of qualification

The Pearson Edexcel Level 3 GCE in Biology A is designed for use in school and colleges. It is part of a suite of The Pearson Edexcel Level 3 GCE qualifications offered by Edexcel. The aims of the qualification are to enable students to develop:

  • essential knowledge and understanding of different areas of the subject and they relate to each other;
  • demonstrate a deep appreciation of the skills, knowledge and understanding of scientific methods;
  • competence and confidence in a variety of practical, mathematical and problem-solving skills
  • their interest in and enthusiasm for the subject, including developing an interest in further study and careers associated with the subject;
  • understanding of how society makes decisions about scientific issues and how the sciences contribute to the success of the economy and society

 

What this role is required to do?

 

  • To chair the Question Paper Evaluation Committee (QPEC) meeting(s).
  • To ensure the question paper(s) and mark schemes meet the requirements of the qualification as set out in the specification throughout the paper production process.
  • Have a clear understanding of the standard applied during the exam series and be able to apply and justify during the awarding process.
  • To chair the awarding meeting for each qualification in the designated subject or subject area, checking that the required standards are brought to bear in each examination component and in each subject as a whole. Have a clear understanding of changes in question paper accessibility, candidate profile and regulatory requirements.
  • To recommend mark boundaries for each grade in each subject at the conclusion of the awarding process.
  • To collaborate closely with the Qualification Delivery and Award Manager/Subject Leaders in carrying out all designated responsibilities.
  • Lead and manage the senior AA team, consisting of Chief Examiners, Principal Examiner/Moderator(s) and Deputy Chair of Examiners (where applicable). Advise on the selection, training and re-appointment of senior examiners and revisers.
  • Contribute to the senior AA performance review, identifying areas of development in discussion with QDAM/SL.
  • Keep up to date on the changes in the Education as well as regulatory requirements set by the regulator.
  • Re-mark work in connection with enquiries about results (EARs) of an examination.

 Experience and Qualifications Required

  • You will have a degree or equivalent in the relevant subject.
  • You will be a qualified teacher, with UK school-based teaching experience, in the relevant subject and qualification.
  • You will have assessment experience of leading a team of AAs in the relevant qualification.
  • You will have experience of managing people in an Educational environment.
