Reference:TIMSSMARKERNEW2022 Closing date:20 July 2022 at midnight TIMSS 2023 Field Trial – Coder (Marker) Job Description Background The TIMSS Coder (marker) is responsible for ensuring that codes (marks) are reliably assigned to student responses of mathematics and science questions, following established guidelines. The Trends in Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) is an assessment that enables countries to compare the student achievement in mathematics and science (in Years 5 and 9) internationally. Pearson and UCL’s Institute of Education (IOE) have been commissioned by the Department for Education to administer TIMSS in England. The marking process for TIMSS is called coding and to administer this study, Pearson is recruiting coders. The work will take place between 25 April 2022 and 13 May 2022, Monday to Friday, 9am – 5pm, with suitable breaks. No other work commitments are allowed during the coding period. It should be noted that there is a possibility for the coding window to finish earlier than is listed above, depending on how quickly the coding is completed. Shortlisted applicants will need to complete a short interview (conducted remotely) along with an interview task to assess suitability for the coding activity. Coders will be required to pass the mandatory training to continue with the coding (confirmation in writing will be communicated after the successful completion of the training.)
Purpose TIMSS coders carry out the coding of pupil responses to the questions in the TIMSS assessments. Detailed coding guides and training will be provided. Coding will be carried out remotely, with coders working in teams supported by a Team Leader and Lead Coder. Main Responsibilities • Attend and participate in TIMSS coder training • Code own allocation of responses consistently and accurately to ensure agreed processes are followed and expected standards are maintained • Demonstrate the ability to apply the coding guide correctly and to the internationally agreed standard through the coding of quality assurance samples and designated reliability items • Attend at least two online meetings each day of the coding period to be trained on items, update on coding progress and discuss any concerns. • Ensure all deadlines are met • Adhere to the key dates and instructions about coding provided by Pearson • Complete all administrative tasks as required • Maintain confidentiality in relation to all the work carried out for the assessments so the test security is not compromised Qualifications You will be applying to code either Mathematics or Science items and will need subject specific knowledge for the subject you are applying for. Our requirements for qualifications are as follows: • Candidates should have an A Level in Mathematics, Science or a related subject at Grade A or B. • Educated to degree level: whilst there is no specification for degree subject, it is preferred for the degree to be in Mathematics, Science or related subject. Or, • You are a qualified teacher with an A Level in Mathematics or Science or a related subject at Grade A or B. Desirable Experience • Experience of teaching at KS2, KS3 or KS4 • Experience of marking at KS2, KS3 or KS4 Competencies Required • IT literate • Able to give full concentration to complex tasks for extended periods • Able to analyse complex written material • Able to meet tight deadlines • Willingness to accept instructions and work within a pre-existing framework • Able to work well as part of a team • Reliable and punctual • Have a good attention to detail Essential requirements • Availability on a full–time basis to deliver coding throughout the whole period between 25 April 2022 and 13 May 2022, Monday – Friday, 9am-5pm. • Attendance of Team Meetings with the Lead Coders. The team will normally meet twice each day, including at 9am and all coders will need to attend these meetings • You will need to have a PC/laptop which can operate the IEA Software, which includes: - 32-bit and 64-bit Windows desktop platforms - Windows 7 upwards installed on a PC/ laptop (Windows RT/Phone/Mobile Operating systems cannot be used) - 2GB working memory - reliable internet access Please note that the TIMSS software is not compatible with Apple Macs.
