BTEC– Chair of Examiners

The Chair of Examiners is responsible to the awarding organisation for maintaining standards across different specifications in a subject within a qualification and from year to year. The chair of examiners must: 

  • Chair the question paper evaluation committee meetings, where possible, for every specification in the subject in that qualification type.
  • Monitor the standards of chief examiners. 
  • Lead the awarding process and recommend grade boundaries for each specification to the awarding organisation.  
  • Submit, as directed by the awarding organisation, an overall evaluation report on the internal and external assessment for the qualification. 

 

Specific responsibilities:

Drive standards through the consistent application of specification requirements through external assessment activities.

Oversee the delivery of effective subject specific standardisation of the AA workforce for external assessment purposes and be responsible for supporting and escalating issues of adverse standards interpretation to Pearson.

Work with Content Production, Chair Question Paper Evaluation Committee (QPEC) meeting(s), sign off external content and contribute to pre-standardisation meetings to ensure the maintenance of standards as well as chair awarding meetings for your area of responsibility.

Maintain regular contact with internal teams within Pearson including Assessment Leaders (AL), Qualification, Delivery and Assessment Managers (QDAM) and VQ Strategy and Engagement Managers (VQ SEM), raising issues as they arise.

Work closely with Pearson to monitor, support and report of the work carried out by the Lead Examiners.

Participate in any marking review for the specification, review learner work and prepare special reports on individual candidates, or groups, in connection with Review of Marking (ROMMs) of an examination, within specified timescales to enable compliance with regulatory requirements.

Requirements:

You will have one academic year's worth of teaching experience: 

within the relevant qualification and subject since qualifying as a teacher

You will have a degree or equivalent vocational experience.

You will have substantial subject knowledge and expertise within the specialist sector.

You will have robust assessment experience and will have been at least a Team Leader or similar level in the relevant qualification.

You will have considerable experience of managing people and teams.

Competencies Required:

A clear understanding of the educational landscape and regulatory requirements for external assessments in qualifications

Detailed knowledge of the specifications that comprise the area of expertise for the role.

Ability to edit materials to ensure they are grammatically correct and fit for purpose.

Excellent communication, written, verbal, IT, and interpersonal skills.

A customer- focused approach

Develop and monitor clear action plans.

Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
